What auto insurance is mandatory in Alberta?

Here’s what’s required by law in Alberta:

Third-Party Liability Coverage

Protects you financially if you are legally liable for injuring someone or causing damage to another person’s property while driving your vehicle.

Accident Benefits Coverage

Replaces lost income or pays for medical or other expenses and may provide a death benefit to loved ones if a covered accident were to happen. Also helps pay for repairs caused by the driver of an uninsured automobile and provides benefits if you or your family are hurt or killed in an auto accident caused by an uninsured automobile.

Direct Compensation for Property Damage Coverage

Will repair or replace your vehicle (or its contents) if you’re in an accident in Alberta and aren’t at fault.

Tip: In some cases, you may want to buy more than the minimum coverage that’s required. An RBC Insurance advisor can help you decide what’s right for you.

Auto coverage to protect your vehicle in Alberta

Unless you want to pay to replace or repair your vehicle out-of-pocket, you may also want some coverage to help protect your vehicle if it’s damaged in an accident.

At minimum, we typically recommend including both of the following coverages in your policy:

  • Collision coverage: Pays for the cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle up to the actual cash value if it collides with another vehicle, the ground, or an object on the ground such as a guard rail.
  • Comprehensive coverage: Pays for the cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle up to the actual cash value if it’s damaged by other unexpected situations—such as falling or flying objects, vandalism, fire, theft or attempted theft, a natural disaster, or a riot or civil disobedience.

Optional auto coverages for even more protection in Alberta

Here are just a few examples of optional coverages (endorsements) you may be able to add:

  • All perils coverage: All Perils coverage combines Collision and Comprehensive coverage. It also insures your vehicle against loss or damage should it be stolen by someone living in your home or by someone you have hired to drive, service or repair your vehicle.
  • Specified perils coverage: Insures your vehicle against specific situations only (such as fire, theft or attempted theft, some natural disasters, and riots or civil disturbances).
  • Extra financial security for your family: The Family Protection endorsement helps protect you and your family in case of injury or death caused by a driver with insufficient insurance.5
  • Alternate transportation: The Loss of Use endorsement helps cover the cost of a rental car or other transportation if your vehicle is being repaired or replaced due to a covered accident.5 6
  • Protection for vehicles you borrow or rent: Get protection against liability for any physical damage that occurs to an automobile that you rented or borrowed for 30 days or less.7
  • Protection for your first at-fault accident: The Accident Rating Waiver endorsement helps you maintain your driving record after one at-fault accident.5 8

Frequently asked questions

Because each person’s situation is unique, there isn’t a single answer to this question. However, using statistics and complex formulas, insurance companies usually calculate your auto insurance premium by taking into account where you live, the type of vehicle you drive (and how you use it), your driving and claims record, other drivers on your policy, the types and amounts of coverage you want and the deductible you choose.

Vehicles that are less expensive to repair will typically cost less to insure.

Tip: If you’re shopping for a new automobile and looking for the best insurance value, an RBC Insurance advisor can give you a no-obligation quote for each of the models you’re considering.

Your policy becomes effective after you select your coverage and pay your first premium. Alberta requires the following coverage:

  • Third-Party Liability coverage
  • Accident Benefits coverage

You may also add on other coverages for even more protection.

You may be able to add additional drivers to your policy. Speak with an RBC Insurance advisor who can help you find coverage that’s right for you and any drivers who may be eligible to use your vehicle.
