If you own an automobile that is operated on the highways in Ontario certain coverages are required by law and are defined under the Insurance act.
The automobile insurance coverage required in Ontario is:
Third-Party Liability at a minimum limit of $200,000
If you or someone else are killed or injured, or if their property is damaged, it will pay for legitimate claims against you up to the limit of your coverage, and will pay the costs of settling those claims.
Uninsured Automobile Coverage
Protects you and your family if you are injured or killed by a hit-and-run driver or by an uninsured motorist. It also covers damage to your vehicle caused by an identified uninsured driver.
Direct Compensation-Property Damage (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick)*
Covers damage to your vehicle or its contents, or loss of use of your vehicle or its contents, to the extent that another person was at fault for the automobile accident. It is called direct compensation because even though someone else caused the damage, you collect directly from your own insurer.
Statutory Accident Benefits
Provides benefits that you and other insured persons may be entitled to receive if injured or killed in an automobile accident.
*Covers damage to - or loss of use of - an automobile or its contents, to the extent that the driver of another vehicle was at fault for the accident. It is called "direct compensation" because, even though someone else caused the damage, the insured person collects directly from his or her insurer instead of from the person who caused the accident.
